2. Take and submit Post-Assessment to Canvas.

3. With permission, provide a picture of you in the sunshine–and indicate that you give permission to use it in the final resource guide.

4. Email your instructor (at pchantrill@ewu.edu) the email address where you would like your copy of the final draft of the Resource Guide to be sent via email. It should be ready in early August.

5. Offer a (quotable) concluding thought about the value of career preparation for whatever you do after graduation. Your quotes will join that of employers, educators, and Career Center staff in the Resource Guide.

6. One last thing before you sign off on this class, please go to (https://ewu.joinhandshake.com/login (Links to an external site.)). “Handshake” is a resource offered by the EWU Career Center where you can see all of the jobs and internships, make an appointment with Jenica, and see the Center’s events.  You can set up a profile–the more completed your profile is, the more related jobs you will see. Thanks to Kylie’s interview with Gini Hinch for a reminder about Handshake! [It is going in our Resource Guide, but you will also benefit now from interacting with it].

Thank you for a whirlwind four weeks. You’ve worked hard and deserve whatever break you can eke out in the next six weeks of summer. My best to you all, –patty

Just a couple of things I’m working on. I figured out how to get the NACE competencies on to one PPT slide and now have the Career Center staff “adapting” the language for each competency for Eastern students in particular.

But, after talking with Virginia (Gini) Hinch, the Director of the Career Center (full disclosure: she’s a colleague and a dear friend), we thought that the NACE competencies really overlap in fundamental ways…and that visualizing them as separate and distinct components (like in the table above) is misleading–at least, it doesn’t quite capture the big idea. So, now we’re leaning toward something more interconnected. This is the first draft of that visualization:

NACE competencies sea shell shape.JPG

Gini also noted that the first four of NACE’s competencies are really aligned with the employer’s wish list for new employees (good to know, yes?), but that the last 4 are more aligned with student traits and characteristics and fundamental qualities we all need as good human beings. Essential in the workplace, but part of who we are as contributors to the greater good. What are your thoughts? Reply Reply to Comment

Below is my powerpoint (Thanks Dr. PC)

This course has opened my eyes up and made me aware of what I need to do with my time at Eastern and how to make the most of my offerings. I want to be a flight attendant after I graduate, so becoming more educated with the 8 competencies has helped with that especially mine being Global/intercultural fluency. Which makes me thankful that I got this one, while it was difficult I learned a lot. With the interviews everyone touched on the idea of being aware of what your school offers and how employers are looking for this skill to possess. All interview people said you should see what you school offers with organizations, classes and internship and all believed it was important especially after graduation and the journey to finding a job. I knew all of these were important skills to possess but I now see/ understand the importance of all of them and how they look in the workplace.  Edited by Cassandra Payne on Jul 19 at 8:58pm Reply Reply to Comment

What a quotable, thoughtful accounting, Cassandra. You were assigned this competency because you mentioned wanting to travel and starting out as a flight attendant. It seemed perfect for you, and I know you’ve really grown in your understanding of this competency. I’m excited for you. πŸ™‚ You will be the most globally/interculturally fluent flight attendant any airlines could hope to hire.

Don’t forget to do your POST assessment…I have your email, your picture, your presentation…and need your final draft along with the Post Assessment. Then, I think, you’re done. How does that feel? πŸ™‚ Reply Reply to Comment

    • Please note, too, that the EWU Career Center identified your competency as influencing all of the other competencies–and being a huge priority for Eastern in particular. I didn’t realize that at the time we started this class, but the more the staff talked about it, the more it seemed like this Competency, while #8 for NACE, was far more important in the context of THIS university at THIS point in time. It also turns out that MY competency, Digital Technology, became less important at Eastern, but still essential–which made me mad. πŸ™‚ Reply Reply to Comment

1. Capstone Presentation.pptx

2. Post assessment completed

3/4. Emailed Dr. PC my photo as well because for some reason I could not get it to upload on this discussion.

5. This class has taught me all the NACE competencies. Before this class I did know much about them. I learned that each competency plays a huge role in career preparation, each of them have their own importance. I recommend all new college graduates to take the time to learn and understand each NACE competency. Mastering the competencies relevant to your career will strongly encourage success.

6. I joined HandShake. I did not know this existed and it is a really helpful site for career searching! Reply Reply to Comment

  • You got it, Lauren! Way to go. It’s wacky computer night here in Discussion 8, and I’m proud of your persistence. I totally agree that ALL of the NACE competencies are so essential. I’m glad NACE created the listing, and I would bet it will continue to evolve with changes in the labor force, in workplaces, and in the economy. But now, you’ve got the tools to make the most of the time you have before you graduate, and I’m excited to see you tackle them. πŸ™‚ Reply Reply to Comment

1. https://prezi.com/p/cwcyatrvncuz/ I have pasted my Prezi presentation as I am still having difficulties uploading it despite Dr. PC finding the video showing how to connect.

2. Submitted 7/18/19 πŸ™‚

3.  I indicate this photo be used for the final resource guide. I apologize for not having a more updated photo but I have been consumed with life as a student, employee, and preparing for my unborn son πŸ™‚

4. Completed.

5.  Career preparation is imperative to incorporate while you are still in your academic endeavors as it will help you develop for life in the workforce as well as to understand what important assets to bring to the world post-graduation.

6. I actually have had Handshake before starting this course so I am “ahead of the game” in that department! Reply Reply to Comment

Way to go, Heather. I always liked this picture of you anyway…it’s sassy. πŸ™‚ So glad you’ve got the jump on Handshake! And I’m impressed that you incorporated “assets to bring to the world post-graduation”–so that we don’t forget not everyone is going 9-5 upon graduation. It’s a big world. πŸ™‚

So sorry about the Prezi link. It works great as a link, but the submitting must be a Canvas glitch. I’ll be sure and remember that for grading purposes. It’s an awesome presentation, really well done. Reply Reply to Comment Collapse Subdiscussion Heather Hall

Jul 19, 2019 Jul 19 at 11:04pm I also wanted to share that the only way to submit a Prezi is if the instructor has a website url submission tab. Unfortunately for the presentation assignment portion, you do not have one of these tabs DR. PC so I will be emailing it to you and hopefully it counts as an assignment submission!  Reply Reply to Comment

I just added website URL to the file options. Give it a try? It’s already graded with your link added into my comments for the assignment, but I’d like to see if we can fix this thing. Reply Reply to Comment

It worked Dr. PC! You’re a genius! πŸ™‚  Reply Reply to Comment

  • 1. N/A…on its way 2. Pending 3. I don’t have a current picture  of myself in the sunshine, but seeing as I’m currently in Florida at the moment, that should be easy enough to provide soon. 4. Send to: tonyramongonzales@eagles.ewu.edu 5. This class has made me more critical of the standards I would expect from a future employer. It’s not enough that I just get a job and start making money, but that my employer must have the same high standards and criteria for values that I expect from myself. 6. Already signed up for Handshake Reply Reply to Comment
