DISCUSSION 5 DUE WEDNESDAY

Dr. PC Jun 24 at 9:31pm No unread replies. 55 55 replies.

Hello 490 Discussants,

1. Discuss something you want to do to really enhance the quality of your final draft (due Friday, July 19). I really need to rework my conclusion and give more attention to the 3rd part of my Lit Review. Also need to proof the citations throughout.

2. You have a “presentation” (worth 20 points) that you will need to turn in when you turn in your final draft. Discuss how you would like to “present” your findings on your competency (PPT? Prezi? Video?)

3. Find a “labeled for noncommercial use with modification” image related to Career Preparation. [HINT: go to google, images, tools, select the above labeling.]  Here’s mine (from wikimedia commons):

4. Identify who you’ve chosen for each of your three interviews. I’m going to nab a faculty colleague at an event on Friday, already did the Career Center interview with Ryan Weldon (he’s awesome) today, and secured the employer one for tomorrow. Just some tips on the interviews: be sure and adapt your interview scripts with the relevant information. It does help to call, because that allowed me to type as Ryan talked. But, you do what works best for the interviewee and your own schedule. The interviews must be completed by Sunday.

5. Respond to all others on at least one of the above items. NOTE: you must respond to SIX other students to be awarded full points. PLEASE DO NOT REPEAT WHAT YOUR CLASSMATES HAVE ALREADY POSTED.

I hope your interviews are going smoothly! I’m doing a TED-like talk on Friday for the College of Social Sciences. I’m excited. 🙂

I’m also including my rough draft in this discussion, too, just in case you missed it in Discussion 4.

  1. I believe that I need to work on my personal example for one of my visuals to paint a better picture for the reader. I could also work on my citation as well as my conclusion. I’m sure as I go through it, I will find other areas that need some work, but these were the main places that I felt needed to be worked on.
  2. Speaking from personal experience with uploading any kind of presentation canvas doesn’t really like big files and every time I try to export it takes more than once. I am between a video and a power point I am going to decide this week and map it all out. I am leaning more towards a video because I can explain and cover more
  3. I have emailed one Professor (Peter Shields) still waiting for a response. I have 2 set up with Jenica Jett and Robbyn Hoffman as well as my coworker.

Cassandra,

It sounds like you have a solid understanding of what your intentions are and what you need to do to enhance the quality of your paper. I also agree with the citations. I personally, have never been strong in the citation department and that’s where I struggle and lose points in so I plan to be more thorough with my citations as well.  Reply Reply to Comment

  • Cassandra, I am also debating whether I want to do a PowerPoint or video for my presentation. I have also had poor experiences with trying to upload large files to canvas, especially videos. For that reason, I am thinking about doing a PPT. Sounds like you have a really good start to your report! Reply Reply to Comment

Hey Cassandra,

I can vouch for your findings on Canvas not being very kind to large file types. A link to a file hosting site might be a better approach? That was going to be my personal workaround. Large files are always problematic no matter what though. Reply Reply to Comment

1. One thing I want to work on is the quality of the content that I am intending to use for this paper. For example, I want to make sure that I thoroughly cover and develop the importance of teamwork and collaboration within the workplace.  I also anticipate putting in a lot of time when it comes to citations especially with it being APA, I am unfamiliar with this type of citation style so I am going to have to do more background research as to how to properly set up those citations.
2. For the presentation aspect that will follow the rough draft, I think that I want to present this with a Prezi rather than a PowerPoint as I feel that I can personify the Prezi more than the PowerPoint.
3.
4. For my interviews, I plan to interview Romeal Watson in the Career Center this week. For my faculty interview, I’ve scheduled an interview with one of my personal favorite instructors as we can communicate with depth and thorough insight, Steve Stewart on Monday the 15th at 9 A.M. over the phone. Finally for the employer interview, I plan on coordinating with my boss from Kelly Services, Jennifer Golla. Reply Reply to Comment

Steve is a treasure, an honest to gosh hero to students, and an absolute, all-around really nice person. 🙂 I really like Romeal, too.

Hang in there on the citations, Heather. I plan to get feedback on the drafts to everyone by tomorrow–before I show up in here from 7-9pm. I will focus on the citations for you so that you know how close you are. 🙂 Reply Reply to Comment

I didn’t fully put my sources into citation. Since it is a rough draft, I will admit that I copy and pasted the site so when it comes close to the paper due date, I can focus on citations the most.  Reply Reply to Comment

    • Hi Heather, I have also struggled with APA citations in the past. I found it really helpful to look at the example format of the report and see how the citations were done there. I used that and Purdue Owl when I did my draft citations. You have clearly identified what you want to work on for your report and I think Prezi is a great choice for your presentation! Glad you’re having such great luck with the interviews none of the professors have gotten back to me I have emailed three now. I hope all of that goes well with you and the rest of this quarters work. Maybe I’ll email Steve if he isn’t to busy! Reply Reply to Comment

Hi Heather,

I like that you’re addressing the quality of the resources you’re using for your topic. I found that a lot of my initial sources were made-up, essentially. It was only when I started digging deeper did I find that there was a much more interesting story going on around Professionalism in the work place. Good luck with your hunt for resources. 1. To enhance my final draft, I want to elaborate more on the history of communication and find more articles with examples of cases of how poor communication skills can have a negative impact in the workplace and when applying for jobs. I want to find and include specific cases with new college graduates.

2. I am debating between using PowerPoint or a video for my presentation. I am leaning more towards PowerPoint.

4. For my interviews I have not yet scheduled one from the career center, I am still waiting on a response. I do have an interview with Brenda Schreiber on Saturday at 10am for my faculty interview and with my hiring manager at work Jonathan Long Friday at 4PM for my employer interview.  Reply Reply to Comment

Lauren,

Just out of curiosity, what is your NACE competency?  Is it oral/written communication? If I may suggest,  maybe do a page response on how the type of communication has better strongpoints than say nonverbal communication if it is oral/written communication if you might be struggling for page length.  Reply Reply to Comment Collapse Subdiscussion Cassandra Payne

Sound like you have a good plan on what you want to do with your paper. I hope it all goes well for you. I also am choosing between the video and power point I don’t have much luck with uploading when I do this. That being said I will do whatever is easiest to upload. I once had to try uploading it 5+ times literally nothing worked, I then had to go meet the teacher and giver her a script. 1. My paper still needs a lot of careful planning to be considered “done”. My goal is to be provocative with my discoveries but also reel it in and just explore the conversation around the controversies I’ve uncovered. Keeping this from becoming an analysis and sticking to reporting, for lack of a better explanation.

2. A PowerPoint presentation mixed with audio is what I had in mind when it came time to present my findings. I’m still unclear as to how exactly I would accomplish that; syncing video to audio, etc. But I will explore some possibilities as the date gets closer.

3.

I chose this image because I’ve always had a soft spot for returning military members and reintroducing them into the workforce, particularly those affected by PTSD, injuries and other traumas.

4. My interview prospects are:

Simon Moorby – manager of Hogwash Whiskey Den, downtown Spokane

Romeal Watson in Career Services ( looks like he might be kinda taken already)

Mimi Marranucci –  Women’s Studies Faculty Reply Reply to Comment

Tony,

I like how you said you wanted to be provocative with your discoveries and exploring the controversies that may uncover. When you do your PowerPoint with audio, would you use your own  or find something that meshes with your findings?  Reply Reply to Comment

  • Interesting…I had planned on doing voice over, but adding in snippets and other clips from interviews would be really nice. I probably won’t have time to make it that jazzy, but that’s a really good idea. Reply Reply to Comment

Dear all, the Agenda for this week is UP and your rough drafts have been graded! *whew* I’ve been too focused on getting my TED-like talk ready, so I really dropped the ball relative to publishing the agenda. [Thanks to Cassandra for being on the ball!] There are 2 videos to watch (35 minutes total) and a review of APA, the NACE competencies to do, along with your Career Center interview to complete ASAP (this week–while they are in the office). Those five items will be the focus for our Quiz 2.

I’d also like to mention that I will award bonus points on the final if it is HUGELY, MAGNIFICENTLY, IMPRESSIVELY better than the rough draft. Okay?

So, if you want to improve your draft grade, do an awesome job on the final draft due July 19th.

And then we will all celebrate. 🙂

Jul 10, 2019 Jul 10 at 8:02pm 1) Everything.. My rough draft is more rough than I wanted it to be. I need to write a better conclusion,  and the rest of my in text citations. I also want to try to find some idea/statement that can weave everything together better. I am hoping that what I have in mind ties in with the interviews. 2) I would like to use Powerpoint to present the findings on my competency. I am not very familiar with Prezi, and now that I learned how to add the voice recordings to each slide I think that would work best for the information. 3).

career.jpg

4) I had chosen to interview a professor from a different college before the email on Eastern Faculty.. but I think I want to interview both because I want to compare how their answers compare to a STEM professor. I emailed Robbyn Hoffman on the 9th but I haven’t heard back yet, so I am hoping to schedule with Virginia Hinch.

Kylie,

My rough draft is also rough around the edges but I promise that it will only leave more room for development. I think you having the interview with the professor from  a different college is going to be good to get a complete outside perspective of the NACE competency that you are working on and it’s creative thinking outside the box. I can’t wait to see how that is going to develop for you.  Reply Reply to Comment Collapse Subdiscussion Tyler Erickson

I think it will be really cool to see two different professors viewpoints from different schools, that was a great idea that you chose to interview both of them.
