DISCUSSION 4 DUE SUNDAY

Dear Students,

This 4th Discussion is intended to be a helpful resource more than an opportunity to hold a group discussion (asynchronically). I’m going to be posting resources–as I find them between now and Sunday–that I hope may prove helpful toward the completion of your report draft.

Your only requirement for this discussion is to find and post at least one helpful resource, either related to the NACE competencies, the writing of a literature review, writing in general, or the APA style guide. This is also an opportunity to ask questions of your instructor, and I will make every effort to respond in this Discussion before the Sunday 11:59pm deadline.

Keep writing that report, but let’s also keep communication open as you get closer to the deadline. I hope you all had an enjoyable 4th of July holiday, even if work was involved. πŸ™‚

More to come, but I wanted to share this older NACE listing on a single page as a possibility for our manual. It only includes 7 competencies (before they added Global/Intercultural Fluency and revised the terms a bit), but it is more visual than we’re used to. Just thought you’d like to see this (and think about how we can do it better!)

I thought this was a nice resource as it covers the NACE Competencies and it is from another college with the expectations that this is what a senior will need post-graduation. It is nice to see that there are other universities that are seeing the importance of these competencies and how they are beneficial for the future. I also liked how it gives recommendations under each competency as to how to achieve the goals within the competency. I feel it could be beneficial for EWU students if something like this were put into play.    Reply Reply to Comment

  • Whoa, Heather! What a great find. This is exactly what our Career Center is hoping to achieve, with our help. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS! Reply Reply to Comment

According to the best colleges for Career Services, the University of Notre Dame (in Indiana) is the best in the nation. See https://www.bestcolleges.com/features/best-college-career-services/ (Links to an external site.)

So, I went to Notre Dame to see what I could find on their “Center for Career Development” website (interesting name for that center, yes? Not just Career Services or Career Center…but career development, with an emphasis on the PROCESS.)  I found a 64 page Career Development Guide, and it is LOADED with great resources, including self-assessments and places to go for extra opportunities. Page 20 has the NACE competencies, too. πŸ™‚ See what you think of this as an ideal resource for every student (SEE ATTACHED).NOTRE DAME CAREER DEVELOPMENT GUIDE cdg_2018-1.pdf Reply Reply to Comment Collapse Subdiscussion Tyler Erickson

This link is a little bit of a guide to writing in APA style. it is helpful for me because i have never used APA before. Reply Reply to Comment

  • Helpful, Tyler! I’ve heard that the easybib cite and places like http://www.citationmachine.net (Links to an external site.) often get the citations wrong, but that just means we need to double check with OWL and other resources to make sure what they’ve given us is accurate. That sounds like a job for a final polish, more than a rough draft, so I’m glad to have you put in what easybib says and double check it for the final report in our final week together. Most importantly, I’m glad to see you working with the citations and trying to get them right. That’s a skill. πŸ™‚ Reply Reply to Comment

I found this PDF from Benedict College on NACE competencies and career readiness. It gives a great description of career readiness and gives descriptions and uses for each competency. I like that it included a What Does it Look Like? part for every competency. It also shows strategies for career readiness which I found very helpful.  Edited by Lauren Blazekovic on Jul 7 at 7:37pm Reply Reply to Comment Collapse Subdiscussion Cassandra Payne

I found this website and it cover NACE comparetenices but goes a little further and has more discussion with other skills that employers are looking for in addition the the 8. It does a nice job explaining things and why they are important to employers.   Reply Reply to Comment Collapse Subdiscussion Tajha Briggs

I chose easybib because with out this useful tool I wouldn’t have made it through a lot of papers. This site has played as a guide for when I need refreshing on writing formats like MLA, and APA. This site as i’m sure for many others also helped me accomplish how to cite my work. I think website is a very great tool, and for those who haven’t used it or even checked it out I would encourage them to do so!  Reply Reply to Comment Collapse Subdiscussion Dr. PC

Hello all, just a reminder: you can only get discussion points for submitting something no one else has already provided. Tyler did easybib and I responded with citation machine. Please find a new resource to share–there’s lots out there, I promise. πŸ™‚ Reply Reply to Comment

I’m attaching my draft just so I can leave it alone for a while. I cannot submit it to Canvas like you can, but it needs to be somewhere. I will now turn to preparing us for our “education” week and the interviews we need to accomplish. You’ll get all needed details tomorrow by noon. Let me know if you have questions or concerns about the attached draft….it’s definitely drafty. But, it may help to give you an idea of the parts and pieces required.

PLEASE NOTE: You are not required to identify your interviewees on your draft. Let’s save that for next week. More to come. πŸ™‚ –pcdigi tech DRAFT.docx Reply Reply to Comment

Whoops! Try two πŸ™‚

The other website I used was https://www.verywellmind.com/apa-format-examples-tips-and-guidelines-4020415 (Links to an external site.)

It was similar to easybib to me in the terms of giving explanations for every different part of the paper as well as checklists. In some ways it was easier to read (less material), but it also gave less information and less examples.

Throughout my freshman and sophomore year of college it was always recommended/stressed by our English professors to use Purdue OWL.Β  Edited by Kylie Maycumber on Jul 7 at 10:53pm
