I am pleased to announce the research assignments for the Summer 2019 Senior Capstone Course:
Tyler Erickson: #1 Critical Thinking/Problem Solving
Cassandra Payne: # 8 Global/Intercultural Fluency
Tajha Briggs: #5 Leadership
Lauren Blazekovic: #2 Oral/Written Communication
Heather Hall: #3 Teamwork/Collaboration
Tony Gonzales: #6 Professionalism/Work Ethic
Kylie Maycumber: #7 Career Management
I will tackle the remaining competency, #4 Digital Technology. Look for a standards rubric in the next few days relative to the rough draft due next week, and thank you to all for helping me to make these choices (I have a rationale for each pairing, based on what you said in Discussion 1 and your Pre-Assessment, and I’d be happy to share it if you’d like the explanation. Please email to pchantrill@ewu.edu.)

Discussion #2 Prompt, PART I: There are 8 articles on your reading list this week. On a first-come, first-serve basis, please provide a 100-word (more or less) summary of ONE of the 8 articles (also listed below) and number your choice as it is numbered below:
- Colleges Say They Prepare Students for a Career, Not Just a First Job. Is That True? (Links to an external site.) – The Chronicle of Higher Education
- 5 Tips to Help Students Prepare for Their Careers (Links to an external site.) | TopResume.
- Career Planning for College Students (Links to an external site.) | CAREERwise Education
- Classroom Learning and Career Preparation: Stronger Together | Construction Trumps Disruption (Links to an external site.) – – Inside Higher Ed (Links to an external site.)
- What every college student should be doing for career success (Links to an external site.) – – Forbes Magazine
- Why aren’t college students using career services? (Links to an external site.) – – The Atlantic Magazine
- Career Preparation for College Students: getting started. DO IT! (Links to an external site.) – – University of Washington
- The four career competencies employers value most (Links to an external site.). – – NACE
Think of this exercise as an opportunity to help yourself and your classmates study for the upcoming Quiz. At least 2 questions from each of the 8 articles/sites above will appear on your 40-question quiz (the balance coming from the Orientation PowerPoint). So please strive to find the essential details of the article you are choosing to summarize. I will follow up with a quick summary of the remaining article/site that no one chooses. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO REPEAT COVERAGE THAT IS ALREADY POSTED BY YOUR CLASSMATE (you can’t get full points unless you cover an article that hasn’t be covered already. You may want to identify your article first, if that helps.)
Discussion #2 Prompt, PART 2: Create a sample quiz question for each of your classmate responses. So, if a classmate chooses to summarize Article #1, your job is to respond to that summary with your own (well-written, Multiple-Choice or Fill-In-The-Blank only) quiz question on what you think is important from their summary.
For full points on this Discussion, create a helpful summary of your chosen article AND respond to each of your classmates with a sample quiz question. This Discussion is due no later than SUNDAY at 11:59pm. This is also the same time Quiz 1 is due, so please consider submitting your Discussion contribution as soon as possible for the sake of your classmates and their study. I will visit the Discussion every day between now and Sunday, just to check in and see how it’s going. Please feel free to email me at pchantrill@ewu.edu if you have questions or concerns.

Not going to lie Dr. PC, this is going to be and interesting topic for me to delve into and I will definitely be out of my comfort zone as I’m usually a “solo rider”.
May the odds (and the force) be in everyone’s favor 🙂
- I’m actually glad to hear you say that, Heather. I wasn’t necessarily trying to get you out of your comfort zone, but I was looking to pair you with something you could gain in the process. You seemed already well-equipped to handle your top 2 NACE competencies, so it’s in the “stretch” that I’m hoping learning will come. I’m more than glad–I’m excited for you. 🙂 Thank you for the note!

7. Career Preparation for College Students: getting started. DO IT! (Links to an external site.) – – University of Washington
This article begins with addressing some of the assumptions about what obtaining a degree will do for you in terms of employment and careers. Essentially, this article explains that the degree is only part of the work and that there are many avenues for job training one can pursue before graduating. Examples of some of these are: Internships, Service Learning, Job Shadowing, etc. It’s also worth noting the attention the article pays to disabled students who might require paths towards employment that differ from what a more traditional student can take advantage of. Your career path can be self-directed, but there are many opportunities to find a career you may not have thought of on your own.
Well done, Tony! Don’t forget to come back in and post a quiz question for each of your classmates (would be 6 responses). Thank you for getting us started. For everyone else, you can “secure” your article/site for summary first by simply posting which one you want to do…*before* you work to summarize it (and save to a word doc/docx for safe copy and paste to the Discussion). Looking forward to seeing your summaries and moderating your quizzes as they come in. –pc Lauren Blazekovic

8. The four career competencies employers value most (Links to an external site.). – – NACE
This article reviews the NACE competencies that employers find the most valuable when hiring new college hires. The study was done based off NACE’s Job Outlook surveys. The article rates each NACE competency on most valuable to least valuable. Over the past four years, the top rated competencies remained the same. The top four competencies are critical thinking/problem solving, teamwork/collaboration, professionalism/work ethic and oral/written communication. A total of 172 surveys were completed in the Job Outlook survey with an 18.5% response rate. To complete this article, the authors created two tables with the average rating of each competency based off the surveys. The tables show the results for employers essential need for the competencies and the employers rating of recent college graduates readiness.

So this article gave 5 tips for students to succeed, as the title says so what i will do is list the tips and give a little summary about what each one was.
1. Dont Procrastinate
This one is probably very relatable to all of us as college students and the basis was very simple. You do not need to wait until you graduate to find a job, and to start looking early and often. it also said to join a work study plan at your school.
2. Expand Your Knowledge
This tip was talking about the classes that we think are useful to us, and basically telling us to embrace those classes because you could end up with important skills you might not of thought you would need and that companies are looking for diverse skillsets.
3. Stay Up To Date
This tip is talking about technology and is saying make sure to stay current and learn new programs like Microsoft Office, and things like that. It also said to know the last two Microsoft Office and programs because some companies may have not upgraded yet.
4. Pay Attention in Science and Math
This tip talked about the growth of the STEM careers and that it is important to know science and math so do not be afraid to take the classes. It said you do not have to major in them, but do research and take some classes.
5. Don’t Forget About Those Internships
This tip talked about internships and how they are important to get on the job training. It also talked about how it is good to get small company internships because they need the help, and you are more likely to learn more and get better on the job training. Lauren Blazekovic

3) Career Planning for College Students (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.) | CAREERwise Education
I really liked article 3 because it fit well with my subject ‘Career Management’. It emphasizes the importance of learning yours skills, values, interests, and personality characteristics and learning how it affects your career choices. Not only will this help you better prepare for your interviews and resume writing, it will also be of benefit when deciding what type of branch within your career field would be best suited for you, as well as how your traits and characteristics will benefit the company.
To better understand your skills, values, interests, choices, etc. the article recommends participating in different career activities in order to set yourself apart such as internships and job shadowing. One of the greatest take aways that students could get from this article is the emphasis of taking whatever you do seriously, not only for future references but also for work habits to build upon in the future.

Being a transfer student and having the knowledge of what career services does, I felt it was no more than right for me to cover an article that has a source that I have utilized myself.
This article talks about what career services provide and how they can be utilized by students as an important asset to aiding success in finding career potentials as well as offering advice and information to assist in post education endeavors. What is interesting however, is that a substantial amount of students utilize resources in the career center that are not as beneficial such as skills tests, rather than focusing on services that help polish up one’s resume. Instead of consulting with professionals in the career center, students tend to find more confidence in confiding with friends and family members when it comes to making important decisions such as determining their own majors.
With students failing to capitalize on the career center, student confidence is declining as students leave college feeling unsure of their skills and appropriate knowledge to survive in the career world. It is also hard for students post-education to find a job with competitive wages as they prepare for the crippling debt that is nearing them soon. It is important that career services understands that they need to provide more in-house services to ensure that students will be successful post-graduation and focus on being more resourceful in what is being provided for their services. Really good questions/responses people. We have good critical thinkers, strong and thorough writers, and people with admirable work ethics in this group. I’m impressed. You know, you can print out the articles, highlight them, keep them by your side when you take the quizzes, too. The only thing the LockDown browser prevents is going to another website or application/program for the answers. I encourage you to take the quiz again, if you’d like to, to show me what you know. The first quiz is always a bit of a gamble, especially if we haven’t had a class together before. I think four of you, maybe five, have been in one of my classes before, but online courses have their own culture and rules.
I will get your week 2 materials to you before noon tomorrow. I’ve also been digging into my competency, “Digital Technology,” and have found some really on-the-nose online resources. You’re going to need 4 really good ones, so I’d start by googling with the exact key words. I used “Why do new college grads need digital technology skills?” to start, and that led me to a phenomenal European site. I’ll share some of that in the Week 2 PPT and video, but you are strongly encouraged to get to know your competency and find…*the best*…resources to work with to draft your report. You’ll also want some background or context or history on your competency, like how it has changed over time and why it is now so critical. I’ve had some fun exploring how digital technology has changed over the past ten years, so then I went and looked at an article written in 2011, also doing a 10 year retrospective on digital technology. It was fascinating. Trying to predict what digital technology will look like in 2029? Evolution and Revolution will take us where it’s hard to predict from this standpoint, but I’m really learning a lot. I guess that’s the point. More to follow tomorrow. 🙂 –patty Cassandra Payne

In article 1 Link (Links to an external site.)
Colleges say they prepare students for a career, not just a first job is that true?
It talks about how we should be taught firm specific skills and develop experience on the job. They compare it to high school kids not graduating with their bachelors degree because much more needs to go into this it doesn’t happen over night. Employers have a role in this as well, but the problem is they aren’t investing into their workers as much as they should. Colleges need to stop downplaying the importance of transferable skills.
